Enabled by the emergence of more capable and inexpensive cameras, enabling software systems and ubiquitous connectivity, modern surveillance has moved well beyond the CCTV systems of the past. Today, surveillance systems are commonplace everywhere, from people’s homes through to their offices, on the streets of our cities and motorways, and in high-risk areas. The burgeoning surveillance industry promises to reduce crime and improve safety but raises questions about privacy and the protection of personal information.
